Why is mulloway called jewfish

I never heard anything remotely anti-Semitic in my youth. Back to the Jewfish. That is just what they were called.

I have seen smallish boats in Port Everglades fish for them by having a winch at the back of their boat with rope and the bait was a hunk of fish on a large hook. The fish apparently lived in deep underwater alcoves in the Port habitat thanks to human dredging a deep port in what were mangrove swamps and would bolt out to get their meal, sometimes hooks included and would retreat back into their alcoves. No one I heard ever had any disrespect for these monster, but they certainly contributed to their decline as did the terrible pollution from the Florida Power and Light discharges from their plant into the waterway which I have water skied through many times in my youth think clear oily gelatinous goo washing up in alcoves.

Oh well,. I can just imagine one of these fish named Mortimer Schlomostein trying to sell me an insurance policy or something. My jewish-faithed friends, who used to dive with me, thought the whole name change effort was a farce. In December of , these two brothers shocked their clients, friends, and family by quitting their 6-figure jobs to start their dream focused on helping saltwater anglers:. Email: fish saltstrong. But in the United States, the jewfish has had proper scientific sanction. Not anymore. The names committee settled on goliath grouper. To me and the committee that was enough. This grouper has a lowercase name; goliath meaning large. What about the Irish lord? The Spanish mackerel, the black grouper, the hagfish, the whitefish? No, it's not a domino effect We know of no other name that comes anywhere close.

BTW Im not a big fan of making sure I'm politically correct all the time as I feel my own rights are slowly getting eroded at the expense of not upsetting every group in sundry And for those who say there are more important issues, well yes there is, but that argument can go for everything, and this is just simple banter that matters not in the bigger scheme of things and is simply interesting to some and not to others.

Go start another thread. Australian fish scientists are attempting to standardise the common names of all fish in Australia. Times change, get over it. Long live the Hugglewumppoddlydong. Seems rather pointless when there is already a different species called Jewfish. Why would you want to cause confusion? Most importantly fish regularly. Ideal tackle for targeting mulloway is dependent upon terrain and the size of fish likely to be encountered.

In open areas of larger estuaries or bays, a to size spinning reel or an overhead baitcaster reel with a similar line capacity will do the job when matched to a 2 to 2. For heavy rock, surf and breakwater fishing, many angler prefer heavier tackle and, on the east and west coasts, sidecast reels on longer rods up to 4m in length remain popular.

The majority of mulloway are taken on lines with rated breaking trains between about 5 and 15kg monofilament or braid. In open water, they can sometimes be landed on much lighter tackle, despite being a powerful adversary capable of making long, sustained runs when hooked. Around line-cutting cover such as rocks and jetty or bridge pylons, heavier gear may be required. While mulloway have strong jaws and sharp, conical teeth for grasping and holding their prey, their capture does not normally demand the use of thick, hard-wearing leaders or traces.

Typically, a monofilament leader about twice the strength of the main line will do the job. Natural, baitfish colours are preferred by most specialists, although brighter colours can be useful in dirty water.

With mulloway baits, fresh is best and live is usually even better! They are particularly fond of eating small tailor, luderick blackfish , trevally, yellowtail scad, pike, mullet, pilchards, garfish, tommy ruff herring and slimy mackerel.
