With re-edited scenes, a lower episode count, a brand new score by talented plagiarist Kenji Yamamoto, and brand new performances from the cast. Some of this is really hit or miss depending on the arc, but Kai makes for a much brisker digestion of Dragon Ball Z.
With Kenji Yamamoto fired, The Final Chapters also suffers from a painfully generic and annoying score. Honestly, The Final Chapters does not cut enough to justify its existence.
The animated Buu arc still feels quite bloated, and the Japanese version features worse performances on a whole. No one could have possibly expected for Dragon Ball Super to suddenly end with the Tournament of Power, yet, here we are. Still, Dragon Ball Super is quite an interesting series in its own right. By the time the Tournament of Power hit, Dragon Ball Super seemed to be in legitimately good shape production-wise.
While the anime suffers narratively, not too unlike Dragon Ball GT , Super manages to ground itself better within the context of the series. Dragon Ball Super may be over, but Super Dragon Ball Heroes has been keeping the animated side of the franchise busy since It is one of the most successful anime and managed series of all time, and continues to run to this day, over thirty years later. Dragon Ball establishes many of the overarching series themes and characters including Krillin, Bulma, Master Roshi, Piccolo, and the Martial Arts Tournaments that regularly occur.
It also reveals why the series is called Dragon Ball and variations of that: the seven Dragon Balls of a planet can be used to summon a mighty, all-powerful dragon who can grant a wish.
As our beloved heroes develop, Villains become allies and allies become villains, while our heroes begin families and their children join the ranks of the Z fighters.
Dragon Ball Z introduced more than just new villains and heroes, though, with new themes such as time travel, and the ability to become Super Saiyan becoming very important to the future plots of the series. Dragon Ball Z continues to be the most heavily adapted in video games and holds a special place in the hearts of many anime and manga fans. Similarly, Dragon Ball Z was the series to make its soundtrack highly popular, with over 20 soundtracks being released in the Dragon Ball Hits collection.
It had a short run over a couple of years, amounting to over 60 episodes that act as a sequel to Dragon Ball Z and featuring original characters and storylines from Toei Animation, it lacked some of the magic that made the original series so special.
Meanwhile, a note that we have included Dragon Ball Z but not Dragon Ball Z Kai, given that the two series are essentially the same thing.
For reference, Dragon Ball Z Kai is a remake of the earlier series, telling the same story but with less filler and some new dialogue as well as updated animation.
Those entries considered non-canon include the series Dragon Ball GT in addition to the majority of the films. Then you also have to make the choice of whether to watch Dragon Ball Z for the more extensive experience or Dragon Ball Kai for the more refined approach.
